Is lucid dreaming dangerous? How to practice safely

Sleep comes first: when it's better to pause.

Early evidence2 min read

A person sleeps under a glowing protective dome on a hill beneath a calm starry sky.

Alarm nights interrupt your sleep. Some studies find links between frequent practice and worse sleep. Whether practice is the cause is still unclear. Caution makes sense anyway.

Our rules

  1. At most two alarm nights per week.
  2. No alarm night after a short night.
  3. Take a break if you’re tired during the day.
  4. With sleep disorders, epilepsy, mental illness or during pregnancy, check with a doctor first.

Nightmares: first studies show that lucid dreaming can help with frequent nightmares. But the studies are small. If you’re under heavy strain, medical or psychotherapeutic help is the right way.

  2. Vallat & Ruby 2019: Is it a good idea to cultivate lucid dreaming?
